What it is

Onix Creator is a web-based tool that converts book metadata into valid ONIX 3.0 XML — the industry standard format required by distributors, streaming platforms, and retailers worldwide.

Publishers bring their existing spreadsheet. The tool handles the rest.

The problem it solves

Every major book distributor — Bookbeat, Storytel, Apple Books, Kobo, and others — requires ONIX 3.0 metadata before they will list a title. For publishers without a dedicated metadata system, producing valid ONIX is a significant barrier:

  • Existing tools require desktop software, technical setup, and deep knowledge of the ONIX standard
  • Manual XML creation is error-prone and time-consuming
  • Outsourcing is expensive and slow

The result: titles sit unlisted, back catalogues stay invisible, and distribution is delayed.

How it works

  1. Upload your spreadsheet — Excel, CSV, Google Sheets export, JSON, or existing ONIX 2.1 XML
  2. Review and validate — the tool maps your columns automatically and flags any missing or incorrect fields
  3. Download ONIX 3.0 XML — ready to send directly to any distributor

No software to install. No XML knowledge required. Works in any browser.

For catalogues with hundreds or thousands of titles, the tool produces a single combined XML file or individual files per title in a ZIP archive.

  • Publishers and distributors preparing metadata for streaming platforms
  • Labels and aggregators onboarding new suppliers
  • Publishers migrating from ONIX 2.1 to 3.0 (required under the EU Accessibility Act, June 2025)

Current status

Onix Creator is in private beta, available by invitation. The first production deployments are underway with publishing partners.

Known limitations

  • ONIX 2.1 import is supported for migration purposes, but some 2.1-specific fields without a direct 3.0 equivalent may not carry over. Always review imported data before generating.
  • Text fields containing XHTML markup (e.g. descriptions with formatting) will be imported as plain text — HTML tags are not preserved.
